I've been using PHP, a server side scripting language since 2002. I use PHP in conjunction with MySQL or PostgreSQL, both of which are open source SQL relational databases systems. With open source licensing your Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is between free and a very reasonable price point. This is a good thing for start-up companies who are "cash poor" or people who want to have personal web-sites with content to manage.

There are two very basic types of web sites,

• static - meaning that the information in them doesn't change very often. Examples of this would be like product brochures or a "fancy" contact page
• dynamic - meaning that the site's information perpetual changes. An example of this might be a product catalog of items you sell on your web site and the current inventory levels of each product. Someone needs to maintain this values and you certainly don't want your web master doing that. You want it to be under your control if not automatically updated as your selling progresses. I use table driven user authentication. What does that mean? It means all the people you give update access and authority to are stored in a system table, that you, as the web site owner/controller. You or those you designate are given access to update your data when it needs to be updated. IT us under your complete control. You give add/update/delete capability to whomever you decide and you give view access only to the people who you want to see certain pages.
